Hamilton Beach Homes & Community

Lakefront living on the strip between Lake Ontario and Hamilton Harbour

Living & Buying in
Hamilton Beach

Hamilton Beach is the community on the Beach Strip, the narrow sandbar that separates Lake Ontario from Hamilton Harbour. It runs from the Burlington Canal and its lift bridge south-east to Confederation Beach Park, with Beach Boulevard as its main street.

For about 50 years the strip had its own appointed Beach Commission, which set local by-laws and ran its own police force, until the City of Hamilton annexed the part south of the canal in 1957. Residents have kept a strong sense of community ever since.

The Mother Daughter Team™ can pull recent sales on the streets you like and help you judge a home on its condition, not just its address.

What to Know About
Hamilton Beach

The Trail

The paved Hamilton Beach Trail runs 4.3 km along the lake and connects to the Waterfront Trail, which runs another 4.2 km west to the Burlington ship canal.

Confederation Beach Park

At the south-east end, a City park run by the Hamilton Conservation Authority, with a sand beach, Wild Waterworks, Adventure Village, go-karts, mini golf and restaurants. Entry to the park is free; there are no lifeguards on the beach.

Shoreline Rules

A lot that backs onto Lake Ontario or Hamilton Harbour is probably in the Hamilton Conservation Authority’s regulated area. Additions, decks, pools, retaining walls and replacement buildings there need written HCA approval as well as a City building permit.

Water and Basements

The strip sits between the lake and the harbour. In 2017, when Lake Ontario ran high, residents here were hit hard by flooding. Ask about the sump pump, any past water in the basement and your insurance before you firm up.

Getting Around

Beach Boulevard runs along the strip beside the QEW and the Burlington Bay James N. Allan Skyway. The Burlington Canal Lift Bridge at the north end carries Eastport Drive across the canal toward Burlington.

Schools

Every Hamilton school’s EQAO results are in our Hamilton schools guide. Check the catchment for the exact address with the board before you buy.
